Mickey, Minnie and Friends’ Snowy Christmas Tablescape

This Tablescape is a part of the “Disney Sketchbook Holiday Series”

Those of you who have been here before likely are already familiar with the “Disney Sketchbook Holiday Series” – which started with a summer “Drawing Disney Tablescape” and morphed into a challenge I set for myself to see if I could do a tablescape for each Holiday using the Disney Sketchbook Dishes and Serving pieces, and often reusing the Disney flatware, mugs, glasses and napkin rings and sometimes even reusing the Disney characters centerpieces as well. The idea is to be able to use one set of dishes, to create about 13 different holiday tablescapes. The goal is to not have to purchase 13 pricey sets of dishes to celebrate the holidays, and also to not have to find a way to store 13 different sets of dishes. (Not that I’m against having lots of sets of dishes…as I LOVE dishes…and I guess that kind of explains my storage problem, doesn’t it?!?) Anyway, my hope is that these tablescapes will inspire Disney enthusiasts, friends, parents and grandparents to plan some “holiday kids’ tables” or tables for “kids at heart”.

A Christmas Tablescape – Disney Style

For this week’s tablescape, I decided to use most of my original Disney characters in a snowy setting. However, I did get a new Mickey and Minnie Mouse specifically for this tablescape, as I loved the Santa Claus and Mrs. Claus outfits on in this pair. I found the pair on eBay and love the rich looking velvet and fake fur in their outfits.

I also already had two small Mickey and Minnie sets that I use as children of Mickey and Minnie, my smallest set was in Santa and Mrs. Claus costumes too.

and I just happened to pick up an adorable small Simba plush at CVS–of all places. Of course we just had to have him, as our 1 1/2 year old puppy is named after him.

For about a minute, I considered getting a Christmas specific plush Donald, Daisy, Goofy and Pluto and a Christmas 12″ Mickey and Minnie, as well, but the only other Christmas character I could find was Donald. I found Donald on eBay. He was vintage (apparently they don’t make each character in Christmas outfits each year) and unfortunately, very pricey. So I decided to proceed without him.

Instead of purchasing Christmas Disney characters, I decided to look for winter outfits I could use for the other Disney characters that I already owned. Following are the outfit sets I ordered from Amazon, 2 sets were designed for 18″ dolls, and the outfit used on Pluto was designed for a small pet dog. My Disney Plush Characters were originally purchased at shopdisney.com, and aside from the 12″ Mickey and Minnie, my characters fit in the “medium” character category – which means they are approximately 15″-18 1/2″ tall. The following chart, shows the characters as purchased a few years ago, the outfit set I used for him/her, and the finished “winter” look. The link to the sets I purchased from Amazon are in the “Table Details and Origins section” at the end of this post.

Donald Duck is also wearing winter boots from the North American Bear Collection, these boots were made for “papa bear” – aka Cornelius Vanderbear and are occasionally available on eBay. I believe they are a part of the Cornelius Vanderbear “All Spruced Up – Adirondack” outfit.

Goofy is also wearing ice skates from the North American Bear Collection, these skates were made for “papa bear” – aka Cornelius Vanderbear. They are occasionally available on eBay as part of the Cornelius Vanderbear “Furrier and Ives” outfit

On to the Tablescape

Once the characters were dressed for their “snowy Christmas day”, I started setting the scene. I decided to use my red tablecloth, and added my fake fur place mats to represent snow.

I originally planned to use a table runner down the center of the table, but as two of the plush characters needed doll stands to stand upright, I decided to use place mats end to end down the middle of the table. The separation between place mats gave me an excellent place to hide the doll stand bases.

Centerpieces

All the above Disney Characters were used as centerpieces on this tablescape. I like to arrange any characters on my tablescapes to tell a story if possible. For this tablescape, I pictured all the Disney characters having fun in the snow. From left to right the character “scenes” are as follows:

Santa Mickey and Minnie are on a romantic sleigh ride, following

Simba, who is running in the snow, trying to keep up with

Mickey and Minnie’s 1st grade twins… who are dressed as an elf, and Santa Claus…

and who are being pulled by Goofy, who is ice skating along until he has to stop…

to avoid running into Donald, who is sitting in the snow, using a dog bone on a string to entice Pluto to move forward with his sleigh that carries Daisy Duck and Mickey and Minnie’s youngest twins who are also dressed as Santa and Mrs. Claus.

The Place Settings and Plate Stack

As I usually do with the Sketchbook Holiday Series of Tablescapes, I planned to use the salad plate in the Sketchbook pattern by Zrike and Disney, and the Mickey Icon flatware. However, as I laid out the place setting, I realized that due to the gold flecks in my red tablecloth, the Mickey icon flatware did not look exactly right, so I experimented with other flatware and charger plates. I came down to the following 2 choices

Disney Mickey icon stainless flatware with silver charger, a red – Kate Spade dinner plate and a sketchbook salad plate, with a Santa Mickey or Santa Minnie napkin ring

or

Gold Oneida flatware, with a gold charger, a red and gold scalloped dinner plate, a sketchbook salad plate, and a Mickey (or other Disney character napkin ring).

With the gold flecks in the tablecloth and the gold in many of the Disney characters, I ultimately chose the gold charger and flatware, but I’d love to know which Place Setting you prefer? If you have a preference of the above gold or silver place settings, please let me know in the comments section which is at the very bottom of this post.

Of the napkin rings, I chose the Mickey, Tinkerbell, and Bambi large napkin rings over the older Mickey and Minnie Santa, although I love both sets. Which is your favorite of the two sets of napkin rings pictured below, or do you have other Disney napkin rings that you love to use?

Due to the gold flecks on the tablecloth,I decided to use the gold flatware and charger for this place setting. The plate stack is as follows

A faux fur place mat is placed on top of the red tablecloth.

The bottom plate in the plate stack is a gold glitter charger plate from Sparkleshome.com, but purchased from Homegoods a few years ago.

Plate 2 in the “stack” is a red dinner plate with gold scalloped edges by Robert Stanley, and purchased from Hobby Lobby at Christmas time in 2022.

Plate 3 in the plate stack is a Disney Sketchbook plate by Zrike, purchased at Homegoods a few years ago. These sketch book plates have appeared in Homegoods stores often in the past five years.

I have 5 different salad plates in this pattern – Mickey Mouse, Minnie Mouse, Pluto, Donald Duck and Goofy, although I only used 4 different plates in this particular tablescape. (shown above)

Completing each place setting is a gold embossed water goblet…

and a Mickey or Minnie Figural mug

Also in the Dining Room

On my small chest of drawers (that houses some of my napkin rings) a Santa Soloist Mickey Mouse plays the trombone.

Even our dog, Simba loves watching him play the trombone, and sway with the music!

Mickey, Minnie and Friends’ Snowy Christmas Tablescape

Disney Zrike Sketchbook Salad Plates, Butter Dish, Sugar bowl and creamer – Homegoods approximately 2019-2023 Zrike Brands by R squared – Homegoods (sold at various times over the last 4 years) – also available on eBay.  When searching for these plates on eBay and other websites, use “Disney Sketch Book plates” or “Disney Sketchbook plates”, or “Mickey Mouse plates” as different sellers will list them differently. This pattern also comes in a Bamboo version, which may be better for very young children.  I think any black and white Disney pattern is a good start for anyone trying to do many different holiday tablescapes with one set of Disney dishes.
