A Trick-or-Treating Tablescape – Featuring Dogs and Cats in Costume

If you have been following my blog for a while, you know that we love dogs! We have a beloved dog- Simba (a Golden Retriever) and a beloved Grandpuppy Athena (a husky lives a few miles away), we also watch movies about dogs, we put up outside decorations featuring dogs, and today I am posting a Halloween Tablescape with dogs.

The original idea for this tablescape came when I first saw the Pier 1 dishes with dogs dressed in Halloween costumes. Unfortunately, I didn’t buy them when I saw them (let’s just admit I decided to wait to purchase them when they went on sale – and by the time they would have gone on sale – they were gone) this is why, when I decided I “needed” them, I had to head to eBay to find them.

The other catalyst for this Tablescape was the ceramic dogs and cats I have purchased over the last 10 or so years Homegoods. These dogs have Halloween costumes on, and think they are so cute – especially meaningful as we usually dress our dogs for Halloween also. Originally when I purchased the first ceramic dogs, I placed them on the landing of the stairs, and in front of the fireplace. When I was using them last year, I realized it would be really fun to use them in a Tablescape too.

Eventually I realized that I really wanted the Pier 1 coordinating “dogs in costume” salad plates that I had missed years ago. They are shown below: The one on the left shows dogs as they are trick-or-treating, and the one on the right show dogs the dogs at a Halloween carnival. After I found both sets on eBay, I decided that I would mix the plates on my Halloween tablescape this year…

…and I planned to use the black Dollar Tree dinner plates (pictured above) that I purchased a few years ago.

However, my plans changed when I realized I wanted the table to have a lot of orange to brighten up the black tablecloth I planned to use. Using an orange tablecloth was not an option as I haven’t yet found an orange tablecloth I like that fits my dining room table well.

The Plate Stack

The plate stack I ended up deciding to use is below:

I planned to use and orange placemat to separate the charger from the tablecloth, however, when I went to the storage unit to pick up the orange placemats I found the orange/black/white braided placemats below, and decided they would be perfect, even though I do not remember buying them!

The Final Plate Stack & Other Items in the

Place Setting

In the end, the table was covered with a black table cloth and then…

an Orange/black/white braided Homegoods Placemat

followed by an orange melamine dinner plate from Hobby Lobby,

followed by a black plastic charger plate from Pier 1

followed by a Dogs and Cats In Costume – Trick-or-Treat Plate or a …

Dogs and Cats in Costume – Carnival Plate

I had a few Halloween napkin rings to chose from, and decided to chose from witches hats or jeweled pumpkins, but when I put the jeweled pumpkins together with the placemats, I loved it, so jeweled pumpkin won the day!!

The Centerpieces

As I mentioned, the centerpieces are the ceramic dogs and cats I have collected over the years from Homegoods.

The Centerpieces on the far right side of the table are an adult Golden Retriever witch, and a Golden Retriever Jack-o-lantern. I love that the backs of these two are almost as detailed as the fronts (see below picture – bottom center for a view of the backs.

Also on the right of the table is a gray kitty, dressed as a bat. This one is new this year and has a velvet cape which gives him a cute look. The cat with the cauldron, in the center, is from a few years back and the small Golden Retriever witch, left of center, is from this year.

On the far left of the table, a cat and dog are dressed as superheroes!

Fall Sunsets

I photographed this tablescape over 3 days due to other happenings at the house and therefore have sunset pictures from 3 different days. I decided to combine the sunset pictures in this post, even though each sunset is a little different.

Patty, the skeletons are sooo funny! There is a giant skeleton waving at everyone over an 8′ tall fence here in Denton and I didn’t like skeletons so much before, but I love funny things so these are all perfect!! Very creative and I can see you winning some kind of decorating award… 😉

I was really happy to feature your post at this week’s Share Your Style #444. The dogs and cats in their costumes are just adorable!!! I have seen a couple of these at HomeGoods and thought about buying them (never did). The plates are adorable as well. Of course I pinned a bunch of photos to various boards (I usually do). 🙂

I’m glad your Golden enjoys jumping in the pool! We were in process of having ours built at our last home in California when our Golden Skeeter passed. He was 14 1/2. Had he been younger, he would have been all over the pool!! He loved swimming upside down when he was a young pup at a small stream aboard Camp Pendleton when we lived there for two years (during the Gulf War, first one, 1990-1992).

Have a great weekend and I hope you guys survived Hurricanes Milton and Helene alright. <3

    Hugs,
    Barb 🙂

      Barbara,
Thanks so much for such an amazingly special comment about my skeleton scenes and about my “Trick or Treating Tablescape featuring Dogs and Cats”. I’m so glad you liked them both! You definitely made my October with your comments!!! Thank you also for featuring my Trick or Treat Tablescape on your wonderful link party #444! I appreciate that so much!
Your Golden Retriever – Skeeter – sounds like an amazing dog!! I would have loved to see him swim upside down!!! Our Simba is not very brave and usually keeps his eyes and nose above the water, but he loves to swim, and to chase his toys in the water.
Have a wonderful week and thanks again!! – Patty
