A “Fishing” Tablescape for Father’s Day!!!!

also for a Fisherman’s or Fisher-woman’s Birthday!!!

Did you know??? “Fisher-woman” is the correct term for a woman who fishes – though it is a word not often used. This was something I just learned today. (Gotta love Google)

Last year’s theme for Father’s Day was “A Harley-Davidson Tablescape” so for 2024, I wanted to choose a new theme. I decided that a fishing tablescape would be perfect for this year because the past 12 months have been Wayne’s first year of retirement, and he has had the opportunity to fish more this year than almost any other year in his life. He and our son have fished at least once on most good weather weekends, and Wayne has also done some fishing with friends.

I have found that, at least for me, there is almost always a catalyst for a particular tablescape. For this tablescape the catalyst was finding Large Mouth Bass fishing plates on eBay. I was so excited to find these plates because “Bass” have been the fish that Wayne and Alan have been desiring to catch ever since we got the fishing boat, and for a long time these fish have been rather allusive.

The “Large Mouth Bass” plates that I found on eBay were originally sold at Bass Pro Shops. I had not even realized that Bass Pro shops had ever carried dishes, so this was quite a surprise. These plates are extra meaningful because this is a fish that lives in our lake, and it is one Wayne and Alan and friends have caught a few times in the past year. In addition, this fish has become even more pursued because it has been occasionally “the one that got away” making the challenge of the catch even more enticing for the guys.

When designing the tablescape, I chose a navy blue tablecloth to go with the blue water in the plates. When the table was not seeming to come together as a whole, I added the fish net “Table Runner” from Hobby Lobby Party Goods Section, and was very happy with the way it pulled everything together (see below).

The first plate in my tablescape is the the Seashell Charger. It was sold about 6 years ago at Pottery Barn but is no longer available. I love these chargers and use them often on my tablescapes. To get a similar look, (with the addition of beautiful sea glass also) check out Susan’s Between Naps on the Porch website for excellent descriptions on how to make beautiful shell chargers. For a few additional seashell chargers, this post from Celebrate and Decorate, is also great and also has great instructions for making the chargers. The only thing I could find that is commercially available now, that even remotely imitated these chargers, are these from Wayfair.

The second plate in the stack is a blue Pyrex Festiva dinner plate. Collectors label these as made in 1950’s and 1960’s, but the only pattern registration I could find was that the “Pyrex Festiva Swirl Cobalt Blue” glass plates were sold in the first half of the year 2000. If you have any information about this pattern, I would love it if you would share it with me in the comment section, as I really enjoy this pattern and would love to know when it was first made.

The third plate in the stack is from Bordallo Pinheiro and is a dinner plate in the “Geranium” pattern in green (it’s also available in white). “Geranium” is a current pattern and this dinner plate is available at the US Bordallo Pinheiro website, and also is often available on Amazon.

The final plate in the stack is the featured Bass Pro Shops Large Mouth Bass salad plate.

In addition, each place setting contains one water glass and one goblet, the goblet is dark blue acrylic.

The water glass is a “fish tail” in aqua, and is also acrylic. They are both from Homegoods from a few years ago.

The flatware is “Towle Living Antiqua Frost” and was purchased from Amazon. It is pictured above. I love the variation of the design on the handles – 2 different sizes of starfish, and clam shells and an additional kind of shells. This flatware is available in a 4 piece place setting, or a 5 piece place setting. I purchased this in 2008 to coordinate with our original lake dishes – which are white with a seashell pattern and were most recently used in my “Whimsical Water Animals Tablescape”.

The napkin rings are from “River’s Edge” and I purchased them on eBay. They are also the allusive “Large Mouthed Bass”. They contain a green napkin purchased at Homegoods.

Finishing the placesetting is a cobalt blue glass fish shaped dish. I have had these for a while and decided to use them here as Candy “Favor” dishes. They contain candy similar to Swedish Fish. See – “Assorted Fruit Gummy Sharks” from the Laetafood store on Amazon.

The main centerpiece is from a Happy Holidays Cookie Jar. This is a Christmas or after Christmas item, and similar to the “Possible Dreams” collection in that it shows what Santa does in his “down time”. Although “vintage”, this cookie jar is often available on eBay (as are many other fish and fishing related cookie jars). I did a search on “Cookie Jar Fish” last night and found lots of different Cookie jars that I think would be great on a “Fishing Tablescape”. Some of the Cookie jars I found were a fish, a dog dressed as a fisherman, fishing bears, and a fisherman’s sachel – to name a few.

Other centerpieces include the ceramic-wicker fish basket, with fish salt and pepper shakers and the Ceramic-wicker basket sugar and creamer,( on the right side of Santa in the above picture).

In different places around the table, three Bass are escaping thru the fish net. These bass are salt and pepper shakers and were a promotional item for Phillip Morris cigarettes. However, I purchased them through eBay. I love the way they apprear to be jumping out of the water.

Recently, I read an Easter post by Linda of “Life and Linda” and loved the lamb and egg butter “sculptures” she made using butter molds – “Fancy Molded Butter” from Life and Linda. She explained the process in her post and encouraged readers to try it. I am happy to say, I found some fish molds on Amazon so that I could add butter molds to this tablescape. Have you used butter molds in the past? This was my first time attempting this and I was so excited with how the fish turned out!!

For the green fish, I added a little bit of green and blue gel food coloring while the butter was at its “pudding consistency” stage, and mixed it with a wisk.

As I was making the tablescape, it seemed a bit empty and I remembered I had some fishing signs and fishing bobber lights that I have used in my skeleton display for Halloween. I did a quick trip to our storage unit to gather those and added them to the table and dining room display.

On the window are 3 sets of fishing bobber lights from Hobby Lobby. In the ugly spots – where the light strings are put together- I covered the unsightly plugs with the wooden “Wishin’ I was Fishin” bobber signs (purchased at Hobby Lobby a few days ago). Fortunately the curtains cover the cords coming down the window to the outlet.

On the table are the Hobby Lobby fishing signs originally used in my “Skeleton’s Gone Fishing” Halloween Display.

Displayed around the dining room are some other fishing decor items.

The fishing holographic sign was a find a few days ago at Hobby Lobby, and was on a half price sale. The ceramic items below the sign are vintage salt and pepper shakers, and napkin rings from eBay.

The view from the dining room window today was an interesting one. At one point when I looked out, I noticed that on the right side of the dining room window was a beautiful sunny day …

….While on the left side of the dining room window the sky had turned dark and stormy looking.

As it turned out, we did have a sprinkle of rain, but then it cleared up, just in time for a beautiful pastel sunset!

Whereas, the next night the sunset appeared with bright bold colors. I absolutely love the sunset on the lake, and the way it changes from one night to the next.

Table Details and Origins for “Fishing” Tablescape for Father’s Day

If you are looking for any of these items and are not a routine eBay shopper, you may not know that the words you put in the “search” can both help you find the items you want, or if you are too specific, can actually keep you from finding what you want. In other words “the key to successful eBay shopping is in the search.” If you are looking for the items below on eBay, you may want to try the italicized words from below in the search first. Then if you don’t get what you are looking for, or you get to many unrelated items, you may want to broaden or narrow your search keywords. Happy Shopping!!

Also, I like the colored butter fish. Good touch. The color brings alot to the presentation. I have made butter lambs for ages. It is a European Easter custom .

Hi, Patty. I’m coming over from Ridge Haven Homestead. Your fishing theme table top is fun! Looking thru your posts, where do you keep all pieces of tableware? Seriously. I would love to be able to do different themes. I just wouldn’t know where to store them all.
    Take care and best wishes.

Debra, Thanks so much for your comment about my fishing tablescape – so glad you liked it. You asked where I keep all my stuff…well, I grew up with a basement, so I’m used to being able to store a lot, but the water table is too high for basements here, so we finally bit the bullet and got a few storage units. I also have found some space in the house – top shelves of the pantry, and former closets of our grown up (has his own house) son. But my favorite places are those where non-seasonal stuff can be displayed year round. The fisherman cookie jar lives on top of our kitchen cabinets so it can be seen all year. thanks so much for commenting! – Patty
