A Blue and White Mother’s Day Tablescape

In this post…

This post contains – A Blue and White Mother’s Day Tablescape; a sunset from the dining room window and backyard, a full moon showing up over the front street in the midst of the sunset happening in the back yard, and a sweet puppy who decided to pose for photos today – in other words a really lucky photography day.

Push play, to see this video of our Mother’s Day Tablescape. For the best look at the details, also click the Full Screen symbol.

Today, I decided to start my post with the tablescape pictures in the same way that we would start our time together if you were here for a visit. First, we would eat together and watch the sunset.

I stepped out of the dining room to take a few sunset photos from the water’s edge, and as I turned around to face the house…

I realized that at the same time as the sunset, a full moon could be viewed over the roof of our neighbor’s house. God’s creation amazes me each day!

In This Post

Now that you have seen the pictures of the tablescape and sunset, I will share some of the details of the tablescape. Then there are some additional sunset and “puppy” photographs; followed by the Tablescape Detail and Origin Page (i.e. where I got the items I used) and then a “Other Posts I hope you will like” section, followed by the Link Parties Section and then the Comment section.

The Featured Plates & Plate Stack

About 4 years ago, when I was first wanting to do a Mother’s Day Tablescape with Mother’s Day dishes, I did a search on eBay and Etsy, as well as in local stores. Unfortunately, I didn’t find much locally, but eBay and Etsy had two plates I liked. The first plate I found was the “Mom is Love” plate that I used in last year’s Mother’s Day tablescape (also shared this year) “A Happy Mother’s Day Table” for Those who ‘Mother’ with Love” and the second plate I found was one from a series of Mother’s Day plates featuring animal mothers and their babies.

This animal series of plates is made by Bing and Grondahl – Royal Copenhagen. This Danish company issued their first Mother’s Day Plate in 1969 and has issued a new plate each year since (including this year’s 2024 plate which features beavers). Because I’m an animal lover, I thought this would be a perfect series of plates for me to collect and use for Mother’s Day. Each plate features one kind of animal mother, and her baby or babies. Each plate also has the year of issue and Danish words “Mors Dag” – which translates to “Mother’s Day”. I found most of my plates on eBay and bought many of them in “lots”, where groups of plates are sold for one price, which often saves money on shipping when compared to paying for each plate and shipping individually. In addition, at the time, I found that the older plates were more reasonably priced, which was the opposite of what I was expecting, and can be a real money saver if you are not looking for the more recent plates.

The table cloth used is by Waterford and was purchased at Homegoods this year. The Pattern name is Kendall and the color is white. The plates used in the plate stack are shown below.

After checking out my available white and blue plates for the plate stack, I chose above plate from Mikasa, from the pattern “True Blue” to serve as my “charger” although it is considered a “round platter” by Mikasa. I love this color – which is neither a navy blue, nor a royal blue, but rather somewhere in between. The plate measures 12 1/2″ which works perfectly with many of my round dinner plates that measure between 10-11″.

The third plate in my stack is the white open work dinner plate from Maryland China. This plate, and the open work charger that matches it – from Maryland China, were used a few weeks ago, in my “Happy Spring Table and Sunset” Post so you may recognize this plate from that post.

On the top of these three plates I placed one of my Bing and Grondahl “Mother’s Day” plates.

I believe my collection includes all except the last 4 years of plates. I chose 8 of my plates for this table. Originally I planned my tablescape for 6 people, but then changed it and made it to seat 8. I think I may change the blue plates a few times while the table is in use this week, as a variety of animals would be fun!!

Other Items in the Place Setting

The Napkins are from Homegoods, and the napkin rings are vintage. They are Pia Bone China napkin rings from the Philippines, and were sold in department stores in the 1980’s and 1990’s. I purchased mine from eBay and Etsy. From left to right they are blue iris, blue pansy, orchid; blue Iris, morning glory or baby blue eyes flower, and blue rose.

Before I go any further, I’d like to give a huge shout out to my friend Susan. If you have visited my website before, you may recognize Susan’s name from her unbelieveable creations as she is an an amazing costume designer, and has worked on many of the Disney costumes, and was the brains and skill behing the Astros skeletons baseball uniforms as well. This week she also joined me to help me set up this table. Her help was so appreciated, and both Simba and I had a great time visiting with Susan and her pup Maggie, as we worked!!

I don’t have a picture of the table just after Susan and I finished putting it together, but we both loved the look of the white table cloth and all the blues. However, before Susan headed home she mentioned that she thought I might add some things – as it didn’t look quite like one of my tables yet. She knows me well, as before the day was over, I changed the butterflies, and added some additional ones, and I also added the butterfly cupcakes on the salad plate (see below). I thought those touches added something, but was still a little concerned about the tablescape having a little too much white, so decided to add two more place setting to the table as soon as I could get them from storage.

Butterfly Cupcakes

I first heard about the above – edible butterflies – on Home Is Where The Boat Is and used Mary’s Amazon link to buy some for my next tablescape with butterflies, so fortunately, when I decided these would be great for this table, I just had to go to my cabinet to get them.

Centerpieces

My largest centerpiece on the table is the white ceramic pitcher with a silk flower “shades of blue” flower arrangement. It also hosts some blue butterflies!

On both sides of the flower arrangement are Cambridge Glass Candelabras. They are one of my favorite sets of Candelabras because their design and blue color reminds me of waves, and lake life. Their pattern name is Caprice and the color is Moonlight Blue.

I also have the bowl in this pattern, and it decorates one end of the table, while a plate in this pattern decorates the other end. Recently, I found out that Cambridge glass was made in Ohio – Ohio was my home state until I turned 32, so now I’m even more excited about these pieces, if that is possible.

The above two pictures show close ups of the candelabras and the butterflies that have “alighted’ on them.

In the middle of doing this tablescape my friend Susan and I went shopping at an antique mall which was new to us, although it has been open quite a while. We were surprised to find a gorgeous depression glass shop there where I was VERY excited to find two more pieces for my collection at a reasonable price. I added my new XL cake plate underneath the pitcher, and traded out the salad plate with my new three footed plate after our shopping trip. These are visible in many of the pictures in this post (the ones with 8 place settings instead of 6) .

Do you like this new table design with 8 place settings and the new glassware platters or do you prefer the one that you saw a few paragraphs back with just 6 place settings? I’m leaning towards this one myself, as it has less empty white space and more blues – but please let me know your opinion in the Comments section at the bottom of this post. Thanks!!

Of course the 8 person tablescape eventually included brownies with butterflies too – seen below on the large footed plate.
